Do your instructors treat you with respect?

Some people say that respect is not automatic, that you have to earn it. My approach is that you deserve being treated respectfully until you do something to lose that respect. That's pretty hard to do, since most of the actions that would cause you to lose my respect I'll chalk up to momentary immaturity or loss of cool. There's really only one way you can be sure to lose my respect: when you don't treat me with respect!

  1. I agree with you in some aspects but at the same time not all instructors act the same way as you or think the same way. I've had instructors treat me very poorly but it wasn't only me, it was almost the entire class. I feel that being a good professor isn't just someone who is knowledgeable about the subject. You have to have the attitude, patience, and kindness to be considered a good professor. I feel some professors feel that they are better then their students because they're older then us or feel they're smarter then us. I feel when someone shows an attitude like this, it shows that you're not giving students respect and therefore, probably shouldn't be expected back. On the other hand, if you show good attitude, I'm positive you will receive it back.

  2. I know there are professors like you describe. I think some of them are tired of teaching and get burned out, and occasionally take it out on students. It shows up in their snide comments to their classes. I hope it never happens to me.
